Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 13:2604

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Waki’ narrated to us, from al-Awza’i, from Wasil ibn Abi Jamil, from Mujahid, who said: Four men participated in a crop during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). One of them said: "I am responsible for the land." Another said: "I am responsible for the plow." Another said: "I am responsible for the seeds." And the other said: "I am responsible for the labor." When the crop was ready for harvest, they disputed over it before the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He assigned the crop to the owner of the seeds and nullified [the claim of] the owner of the land. He assigned a known amount to the owner of the plow, and he assigned to the owner of the labor a dirham for every day. Wasil said: I narrated this to Makhul, and he said: "This hadith is more beloved to me than a young servant." Waki’ said: The most beloved form of cultivation to us is trade with gold, silver, and food, and this is the opinion of Sufyan. Waki’ said: And we hope that [sharecropping for] a half, a third, or a quarter is permissible, because the people act upon it.
