Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 13:771

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Mu'adh narrated to us, from Ash'ath, from al-Hasan, that he did not consider the *hawala* (transfer of debt) to be an acquittal unless he (the creditor) acquitted him. So if he acquits him, then he is acquitted.
