Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 13:903

Abu Bakr narrated to us, he said: Yazid bin Harun narrated to us, from Hajjaj, from Makhul, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Any man who marries a woman upon a dowry or a promise, it is for her if it was before the marriage contract. If he gives a gift to her family after the marriage contract, it is for them. And the most deserving thing with which a man honors his daughter and his sister [is the dowry]."
