Hadith 37:180
Muhammad ibn Bishr narrated to us, he said: Abu Hayyan narrated to me, from Abu Zur'ah, who said: Three men from the Muslims sat with Marwan ibn al-Hakam and heard him narrating about the signs, that the first of them is the emergence of the Dajjal. The men went to Abdullah ibn Amr and told him what they had heard from Marwan ibn al-Hakam regarding the signs, that the first of them is the emergence of the Dajjal. Abdullah said: "Marwan has not said anything. I have memorized a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) which I have not forgotten, as I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) say: 'Indeed, the first of the signs to emerge is the rising of the sun from its place of setting, or the emergence of the Beast to the people in the forenoon. Whichever of them occurs before its companion, the other is close behind it.'" Then Abdullah said—and he used to read the scriptures—"And I think the first of them to emerge is the rising of the sun from its place of setting. That is because whenever it sets, it comes beneath the Throne and prostrates, then it asks permission to return, and it is permitted to return. Until, when Allah wills that it should rise from its place of setting, it will come beneath the Throne and prostrate and ask permission, but nothing will be replied to it. Then it will return and ask permission to return, but nothing will be replied to it. Then it will return and ask permission to return, but nothing will be replied to it. Until, when as much of the night as Allah wills has passed, and it realizes that if it were permitted to return, it would not reach the east, it will say: 'O Lord, how far is the east!' It will say: 'Who will [intercede] for me with the people?' Until, when the horizon illuminates as if it were a ring, it will ask permission to return, and it will be said to it: 'Stay where you are, and rise.' So it will rise upon the people from its place of setting." Then Abdullah recited this verse: "The day that some of the signs of your Lord will come, no soul will benefit from its faith as long as it had not believed before, or had earned through its faith some good."
