Hadith 37:20
Marwan bin Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from 'Awf, from Abu al-Minhal Sayyar bin Salamah, who said: When the time of Ibn Ziyad's emergence came, Marwan revolted in the Levant when he revolted, and Ibn al-Zubayr revolted in Makkah, and the reciters (Qurra') revolted in Basra. Abu al-Minhal said: My father was severely distressed, and he used to speak well of his father. He said: My father said to me, "O my son, come with us to this man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)." So we went to Abu Barzah al-Aslami on a hot day, of intense heat, and he was sitting in the shade of a high structure of his made of reeds. My father began to seek a conversation from him, and he said, "O Abu Barzah, do you not see? Do you not see?" The first thing he spoke was: "I have woken up angry at the tribes of Quraysh. You, O group of Arabs, were in the state that you know of your scarcity and your ignorance (Jahiliyyah), and Allah raised you up through Islam and through Muhammad until you reached what you see. And this world is what has corrupted [the relations] between you. That one who is in the Levant—meaning Marwan—by Allah, he is only fighting for the sake of the world. And that one who is in Makkah—meaning Ibn al-Zubayr—by Allah, he is only fighting for the sake of the world. And these who are around you, whom you call your reciters, by Allah, they are only fighting for the sake of the world." He said: When he did not leave anyone out, my father said to him, "O Abu Barzah, what do you see [as the solution]?" He said: "I do not see today anything better than a group [of people] whose hair is matted, whose bellies are empty of the people's wealth, and whose backs are light from their blood."
حدثنا مروان بن معاوية عن عوف عن أبي المنهال سيار بن سلامة قال لما كان زمن خرج بن زياد وثب مروان بالشام حين وثب ووثب بن الزبير بمكة ووثبت القراء بالبصرة قال قال أبو المنهال غم أبي غما شديدا قال وكان يثني على أبيه خيرا قال قال لي أبي أي بني انطلق بنا إلى هذا الرجل من صحابة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فانطلقنا إلى أبي برزة الأسلمي في يوم حار شديد الحر وإذا هو جالس في ظل علو له من قصب فأنشأ أبي يستطعمه الحديث فقال يا أبا برزة ألا ترى الا ترى فكان أول شيء تكلم به قال إني أصبحت ساخطا على أحياء قريش إنكم معشر العرب كنتم على الحال التي قد علمتم من قلتكم وجاهليتكم وإن الله نعشكم بالإسلام وبمحمد حتى بلغ بكم ما ترون وإن هذه الدنيا هي التي قد أفسدت بينكم إن ذاك الذي بالشام يعني مروان والله إن يقاتل إلا على الدنيا وإن ذاك الذي بمكة يعني بن الزبير والله إن يقاتل إلا على الدنيا وإن هؤلاء الذين حولكم تدعونهم قراءكم والله إن يقاتلون إلا على الدنيا قال فلما لم يدع أحدا قال له أبي يا أبا برزة ما ترى قال لا أرى اليوم خيرا من عصابة ملبدة خماص بطونهم من أموال الناس خفاف ظهورهم من دمائهم
