Hadith 37:21
Abu Mu’awiyah, Ibn Numayr, and Humayd ibn Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, from al-A’mash, from Shaqiq, from Hudhayfah, who said: We were sitting with Umar, and he said: "Which of you remembers the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) regarding the *fitnah* (tribulation) as he said it?" I said: "I do." He said: "You are indeed bold. How is it?" I said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: 'The *fitnah* of a man regarding his family, his wealth, his self, and his neighbor is expiated by fasting, charity, enjoining good, and forbidding evil.'" Umar said: "That is not what I mean. I mean the one that surges like the surging of the sea." I said: "What do you have to do with it, O Commander of the Faithful? For indeed, between you and it is a closed door." He said: "Will the door be broken or opened?" I said: "No, rather it will be broken." He said: "That is more likely that it will never be closed again." We said to Hudhayfah: "Did Umar know who the door was?" He said: "Yes, just as I know that tomorrow comes after tonight. I told him a hadith that was not a mistake." We were afraid to ask Hudhayfah who the door was, so we said to Masruq: "Ask him." So he asked him, and he said: "Umar."
حدثنا أبو معاوية وبن نمير وحميد بن عبد الرحمن عن الأعمش عن شقيق عن حذيفة قال كنا جلوسا عند عمر فقال أيكم يحفظ حديث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في الفتنة كما قال فقلت أنا قال فقال إنك لجريء وكيف قال قلت سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول فتنة الرجل في أهله وماله ونفسه وجاره يكفرها الصيام والصدقة والأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر فقال عمر ليس هذا أريد إنما أريد التي تموج كموج البحر قال قلت مالك ولها يا أمير المؤمنين إن بينك وبينها بابا مغلقا قال فيكسر الباب أم يفتح قال قلت لا بل يكسر قال ذاك أحرى أن لا يغلق أبدا قال قلنا لحذيفة هل كان عمر يعلم من الباب قال نعم كما أعلم أن غدا دون الليلة إني حدثته حديثا ليس بالأغاليط قال فهبنا حذيفة أن نسأله من الباب فقلنا لمسروق سله فسأله فقال عمر
