Hadith 37:240
Yahya ibn Adam narrated to us, he said: Abu Shihab narrated to us, from al-Hasan ibn ‘Amr al-Fuqaymi, from Mundhir al-Thawri, from Sa‘d ibn Hudhayfah, who said: When the people became weary of Sa‘id ibn al-‘As, they wrote a document among themselves that no man should be appointed over them except one whom they were pleased with for themselves and their religion. While they were in that state, Hudhayfah arrived from al-Mada’in, so they came to him with their document and said: "O Abu ‘Abd Allah, we have done to this man what has reached you, then we wrote this document, and we wished not to decide any matter without you." He looked at their document and laughed, then said: "By Allah, I do not know which of the two things you intended: did you intend to take charge of the authority of a people who are not yours? Or did you intend to turn back this tribulation when its halter has been released and it has become upright? It is indeed sent by Allah upon the earth, grazing until it treads upon its own halter. No one among the people will be able to turn it back, and no one among the people will fight in it except that he will be killed, until Allah sends forth clouds like the clouds of autumn, through whom there will be [reconciliation] among them."
