Hadith 37:263
Waki’ narrated to us, from Abu ‘Asim al-Thaqafi, from Qays ibn Muslim, from Tariq ibn Shihab, who said: The news of the killing of ‘Uthman reached us while I was still feeling youth and strength in myself, and if I had been killed in battle, I would have fought. So I went out, attending to the people, until I was at al-Rabadhah, and behold, ‘Ali was there. He led them in the ‘Asr prayer, and when he finished the salutation, he leaned his back against [the wall of] its mosque and faced the people. Then al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali stood up to speak to him while he was weeping. ‘Ali said to him, "Speak, and do not wail like a slave girl." He [al-Hasan] said, "I commanded you when the people besieged this man [‘Uthman] to go to Makkah and stay there, but you disobeyed me. Then I commanded you when he was killed to stay in your house until the Arabs returned to their senses, for even if you were in a lizard’s hole, they would have struck the armpits of their camels to reach you until they extracted you from your hole, but you disobeyed me. And I adjure you by Allah not to go to Iraq, lest you be killed in a state of ruin." He [Tariq] said: So ‘Ali said, "As for your saying that I should go to Makkah, I was not the man for whom Makkah would be made lawful [as a sanctuary for conflict]. And as for your saying that the people killed ‘Uthman, what is my sin if the people killed him? And as for your saying that I should go to Iraq and be like the hyena listening to the blood..."
