Hawdha ibn Khalifa narrated to us, 'Awf narrated to us, from al-Hasan, from Usayd ibn al-Mutashammis, who said: We were with Abu Musa, and he said: "Shall I not narrate to you a hadith that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to narrate to us?" We said: "Yes." He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The Hour will not be established until *al-harj* increases." We said: "O Messenger of Allah, and what is *al-harj*?" He said: "Killing, killing." We said: "More than what we kill today?" He said: "It is not the killing of the disbelievers, but rather a man will kill his neighbor, his brother, and his cousin." He said: We became silent, to the point that none of us could show a clear expression. He said: We said: "And will we have our intellects on that day?" He said: "The intellects of most of the people of that time will be snatched away, and there will remain the dregs of the people; most of them will think that they are upon something, while they are upon nothing." "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, I have feared that these matters might overtake me and you. And if they overtake us, I have no way out of them for myself or for you, except that we exit them just as we entered them."
