Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 37:507

Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, from al-Taymi, from Nu’aym ibn Abi Hind, that Abu Mas’ud went out from Kufa while his head was dripping [with water], and he intended to enter into Ihram. They said to him, "Advise us." He said, "O people, be suspicious of [your own] opinion, for I have seen myself intending to strike with my sword in disobedience to Allah and disobedience to His Messenger." They said, "Advise us." He said, "You must adhere to the community (al-jama’ah), for Allah would not gather the nation of Muhammad upon misguidance." They said, "Advise us." He said, "You must have taqwa (fear/consciousness) of Allah, and patience, until a righteous person finds rest or one is relieved of a wicked person."
