Hadith 37:52
Ali ibn Mushir narrated to us, from Isma'il, from Abu Salih al-Hanafi, who said: A man came to Hudhayfah and to Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari while they were sitting in the mosque, and the people of Kufa had expelled Sa'id ibn al-'As. He said: "What is holding you back when the people have gone out? By Allah, we are upon the Sunnah." They both said: "And how can you be upon the Sunnah when you have expelled your leader? By Allah, you will not be upon the Sunnah until the shepherd is compassionate and the subjects are sincere." He said: A man said to him: "If the shepherd is not compassionate and the subjects are not sincere, then what do you command us to do?" He said: "We go out and leave you."
حدثنا علي بن مسهر عن إسماعيل عن أبي صالح الحنفي قال جاء رجل إلى حذيفة وإلى أبي مسعود الأنصاري وهما جالسان في المسجد وقد طرد أهل الكوفة سعيد بن العاص فقال ما يحبسكم وقد خرج الناس فوالله إنا لعلى السنة فقالا وكيف تكونون على السنة وقد طردتم إمامكم والله لا تكونون على السنة حتى يشفق الراعي وتنصح الرعية قال فقال له رجل فإن لم يشفق الراعي وتنصح الرعية فما تأمرنا قال نخرج وندعكم
