'Affan narrated to us, he said: Jarir ibn Hazim narrated to us, he said: Ya'la ibn Hakim informed us, from Nafi', he said: 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar narrated to me, he said: 'Uthman said to me while he was besieged in the house: "What do you say regarding what al-Mughirah ibn al-Akhnas suggested to me?" I said: "And what did he suggest to you?" He said: "These people want me to abdicate. If I abdicate, they will leave me, and if I do not abdicate, they will kill me." I said: "Tell me, if you abdicate, do you think you will live forever in this world?" He said: "No." I said: "Do they possess Paradise and Hell?" He said: "No." I said: "Tell me, if you do not abdicate, will they do anything more than kill you?" He said: "No." I said: "Tell me, will you establish this precedent in Islam, that whenever a people are displeased with a leader, they depose him? Do not take off a shirt that Allah has clothed you with."
