Hadith 27:1
Muhammad ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad, from Abdullah ibn al-Harith, from al-Muttalib ibn Rabi'ah, that some people from the Ansar said to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace: "We hear from your people until one of them says: 'The likeness of Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is only like a palm tree that grew in a heap of dung.'" He said: So the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "O people, who am I?" They said: "You are the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace." He said: "I am Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn al-Muttalib." He said: We had never heard him attribute himself [to his lineage] before that. Then he said: "Indeed, Allah created His creation and placed me among the best of His creation. Then He divided them into two groups and placed me in the best of the two groups. Then He made them into tribes and placed me in the best of them as a tribe. Then He made them into households and placed me in the best of them as a household. So I am the best of you in household and the best of you in person."
