Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 27:113

Suwayd ibn ‘Amr al-Kalbi and Malik narrated to us, from Abu Isma’il, from Abu ‘Awanah, from Qatadah, from Abu al-Malih, from ‘Awf ibn Malik al-Ashja’i, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) camped with us one night, and each one of us spread out the forearm of his riding beast. I woke up during part of the night, and the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) had no one in front of it. I went out seeking the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and there were Mu’adh ibn Jabal and ‘Abdullah ibn Qays standing. I said, "Where is the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)?" They said, "We do not know, except that we heard a sound at the top of the valley like the humming of a millstone." We did not wait but a little while until the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) came and said, "Indeed, a comer from my Lord came to me tonight and gave me the choice between having half of my nation enter Paradise and [the gift of] intercession, and I chose intercession." We said, "O Messenger of Allah, we adjure you by Allah and by [our] companionship [with you] that you make us among the people of your intercession." He said, "Then you are among the people of my intercession." He said: We then approached the people quickly. He said: They had become alarmed and had missed their Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). He said, "Indeed, a comer from my Lord came to me tonight and gave me the choice between having half of my nation enter Paradise and [the gift of] intercession, and I chose intercession." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, we adjure you by Allah and by [our] companionship [with you] that you make us among the people of your intercession." When they pressed upon him, he said, "Then I call as witness whoever is present that my intercession is for whoever dies not associating anything with Allah."
