Hadith 27:197

Abu Usama narrated to us, from Sulayman ibn al-Mughira, from Humayd ibn Hilal, who said: Jundub said: Hudhayfa said: When the messengers were sent to the people of Lot to destroy them, it was said to them: "Do not destroy them until Lot testifies against them three times." He said: Their path was by way of Abraham, peace be upon him. He said: So they came to Abraham. He said: When they gave him the glad tidings of what they gave him, he said: "And when the fear had left Abraham and the glad tidings had reached him, he began to argue with Us concerning the people of Lot." He said: His arguing with them was that he said: "Do you see, if there were fifty Muslims among them, would you destroy them?" They said: "No." He said: "Do you see, if there were forty?" He said: They said: "No," until he reached ten or five—Humayd was uncertain about that. He said: So they came to Lot while he was working on a piece of land of his. He said: He thought they were human beings. He said: So he approached with them secretly until he reached his family in the evening. He said: They walked with him, and he turned to them and said: "Do you know what these people are doing?" They said: "And what are they doing?" He said: "There is no one among the people who is more evil than them." He said: They turned their ears to what he said and walked with him. He said: Then he said the same thing, and he repeated the same thing to them three times. He said: He reached his family with them. He said: His old wife—the evil old woman—went to his people and said: "Lot has hosted men tonight; I have never seen men with more beautiful faces or a more pleasant scent than them." He said: So they came rushing toward him and pushed against the door until they almost overcame him. He said: One of the angels reached out with his wing and struck them away from him. He said: Lot climbed the door, and they climbed with him. He said: He began to address them: "These are my daughters; they are purer for you. So fear Allah and do not disgrace me concerning my guests. Is there not among you a man of right conduct?" He said: They said: "You have already known that we have no right to your daughters, and indeed you know what we want." He said: He said: "If only I had power against you or could take refuge in a strong support." They said: "O Lot, indeed we are messengers of your Lord; they will never reach you." He said: That was when he knew they were the messengers of Allah. Then he recited until His saying: "Is not the morning near?" He said: And an angel said—and he reached out with his wing like this, meaning a gesture of striking—and no one among them approached him that night except that he became blind. He said: They spent the worst night, blind, waiting for the punishment. He said: And he traveled with his family until he said: Gabriel asked permission for their destruction, and he was granted permission. So he lifted the land they were upon. He said: He raised it until the inhabitants of the lowest heaven heard the barking of their dogs. He said: Then he overturned it upon them. He said: His wife—meaning Lot’s—heard the crash while she was with him, so she turned around and the punishment struck her. And the stones followed those who were traveling among them.
