Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 27:201

Ibn ‘Ulayyah narrated to us, from al-Jurayri, from Abu al-Sulayl, from Qays ibn ‘Abbad—and he was among the people who spoke most, or among the most recent to speak, about the Children of Israel—he said: He narrated to us that the small group whom Pharaoh named from the Children of Israel were six hundred thousand. Pharaoh’s vanguard was seven hundred thousand, every man among them upon a horse, upon his head a helmet, and in his hand a spear, while he [Pharaoh] was behind them in the main body. When Moses, peace be upon him, reached the sea with the Children of Israel, the Children of Israel said: "Where is what you promised us? This sea is before us, and this is Pharaoh and his soldiers who have overtaken us from behind us." Moses, peace be upon him, said to the sea: "Split, Aba Khalid." It said: "I will not split for you, O Moses; I am older than you in creation, or stronger." He said: Then it was called out: "Strike the sea with your staff." So he struck it, and it split. Al-Jurayri said: They were twelve tribes, and for each tribe among them was a path. When the first of Pharaoh’s soldiers reached the sea, the horses were afraid. A mare in heat was represented to one of the horses, so it caught her scent and rushed, and the horses followed it. When the last of Pharaoh’s soldiers had completed their entry into the sea, the last of the Children of Israel exited the sea, and it closed upon them. The Children of Israel said: "Pharaoh has not died, and he would never die." He said: It was not long before Allah heard their denial of His Prophet, so He cast him upon the shore as if he were a red bull, for the Children of Israel to see.
