Hadith 27:228

Ubayd Allah narrated to us, he said: Isra'il informed us, from Abu Ishaq, from 'Amr ibn Maymun, who said: Abdullah ibn Mas'ud narrated in the Bayt al-Mal, from Yunus, he said: Indeed, Yunus had promised his people the punishment and informed them that it would come to them within three days. So they separated every mother from her child, then they went out and cried out to Allah and sought His forgiveness, so Allah withheld the punishment from them. Yunus went out waiting for the punishment, but he did not see anything. And it was [the custom] that whoever lied and did not have proof was killed. So he departed in anger until he came to some people in a ship, and they carried him and recognized him. When he entered the ship, it became still, while the ships were moving to the right and to the left. He said, "What is the matter with your ship?" They said, "We do not know." Yunus said, "Indeed, there is a slave in it who has fled from his Lord, and it will not move until you throw him." They said, "As for you, O Prophet of Allah, by Allah, we will not throw you." Yunus said to them, "Cast lots, and whoever is drawn, let him fall." He cast lots among them, but they refused to let him fall. They said, "Whoever is drawn three times, let him fall." So Yunus cast lots among them three times, and he fell. A whale had been appointed for him, and when he fell, it swallowed him and descended with him to the bottom of the earth. Yunus heard the glorification of the pebbles, so he called out in the darkness, "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers." There were three darknesses: the darkness of the belly of the whale, the darkness of the sea, and the darkness of the night. He said: "Then We cast him onto the open shore while he was ill." He said: Like a plucked chick that has no feathers. Allah caused a gourd tree to grow over him; he would seek shade under it and eat from it. Then it withered, so he wept over it when it withered. Allah revealed to him, "Do you weep over a tree that withered, and you do not weep over a hundred thousand or more whom you wanted to destroy?" So he went out, and there was a boy tending sheep. He said, "To whom do you belong, O boy?" He said, "To the people of Yunus." He said, "If you return to them, inform them that you have met Yunus." The boy said to him, "If you are Yunus, you know that whoever lies and has no proof is to be killed. So who will testify for me?" Yunus said to him, "This tree and this plot of land will testify for you." The boy said to them, "Command them." Yunus said to them, "If this boy comes to you, testify for him." They said, "Yes." The boy returned to his people, and he had brothers, and he was in a position of strength. He came to the king and said, "I have met Yunus, and he sends you peace." The king ordered that he be killed. They said to him, "He has proof." So he sent [people] with him, and they reached the tree and the plot of land. The boy said to them, "I adjure you by Allah, did Yunus make you testify?" They said, "Yes." The people returned terrified, saying, "The trees and the earth testify for him." They came to the king and told him what they had seen. Abdullah said: The king reached out and took the boy's hand and seated him in his place and said, "You are more entitled to this place than I am." Abdullah said: That boy established their affairs for them for forty years.
