Hadith 27:284
Waki’ narrated to us, from ‘Imran bin Hudayr, from Abu Mijlaz, who said: ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abbas came to Ibn Salam and said: “I want to ask you about three things.” He said: “You ask me while you recite the Qur’an?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “Then ask.” He said: “Inform me about Tubba’, what he was; and about ‘Uzayr, what he was; and about Sulayman, why he missed the hoopoe.” He said: “As for Tubba’, he was a man from the Arabs who prevailed over the people. He wished for some youths from the righteous, so he brought them in, and he would speak to them and they would speak to him. His people said: ‘Tubba’ has abandoned your religion and pledged allegiance to the youths.’ Tubba’ said to the youths: ‘You hear what these people are saying.’ They said: ‘Between us and them is the fire which burns the liar and from which the truthful one is saved.’ He said: ‘Yes.’ Tubba’ said to the youths: ‘Enter it.’ He said: So they girded their scriptures and entered it, and it parted for them until they crossed it. Then he said to his people: ‘Enter it.’ When they entered it, the fire scorched their faces, so they recoiled. He said: ‘You shall surely enter it.’ He said: So they entered it, and it parted for them until, when they were in the middle of it, it surrounded them and burned them. He said: So Tubba’ submitted [to Islam], and he was a righteous man. And as for ‘Uzayr, when Jerusalem was destroyed, knowledge was effaced, and the Torah was burned, he would be lonely in the mountains. He would go to a spring to drink from it. He said: He went to it one day, and there was a woman who had appeared to him. When he saw her, he recoiled. When thirst overcame him, he came to her, and she was weeping. He said: ‘What makes you weep?’ She said: ‘I weep for my son.’ He said: ‘Was your son provided for?’ She said: ‘No.’ He said: ‘Was he a creator?’ She said: ‘No.’ He said: ‘Then do not weep for him.’ She said: ‘Who are you? Do you want your people? Enter this spring, for you will find them.’ He said: So he entered it. He said: Every time he entered it, his knowledge was increased, until he reached his people, and Allah had restored his knowledge to him, so he revived the Torah for them and revived the knowledge for them. He said: This is ‘Uzayr. And as for Sulayman, he descended at a place during a journey, and he did not know the distance of the water from him, so he asked those who knew its knowledge, and they said: ‘The hoopoe.’ That is why he missed him.”
