Ibn ‘Ulayyah narrated to us, from Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah, that a man from Quraysh, who was called Thumamah, was over San‘a’. When the news of the killing of ‘Uthman reached him, he wept and wept for a long time. When he recovered, he said: "Today, Prophethood—or he said: the Caliphate of Prophethood—has been uprooted, and it has become a monarchy and tyranny. Whoever overcomes something, consumes it."
