Zayd ibn al-Hubab narrated to us, he said: Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, he said: Rabi'ah ibn Yazid al-Dimashqi narrated to me, he said: Abdullah ibn 'Amir narrated to us that he heard al-Nu'man ibn Bashir. Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan sent him with a letter to Aisha. He delivered it to her, and she said to me: "Shall I not narrate to you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him?" I said: "Yes." She said: "I was with him one day, I and Hafsa, and he said: 'If only we had a man here to speak to us.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, send for Abu Bakr so he may come and speak to us.' He remained silent. Hafsa said: 'O Messenger of Allah, send for Umar so he may speak to us.' He remained silent." She said: "Then he called a man and whispered to him, excluding us. He went, then Uthman came. He turned his face toward him, and I heard him saying: 'O Uthman, perhaps Allah will clothe you in a shirt; if they want you to take it off, do not take it off,' three times." I said: "O Mother of the Believers, where were you regarding this hadith?" She said: "I forgot it, as if I had never heard it at all."
