Zayd ibn al-Hubab narrated to us, he said: Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, he said: Yazid ibn 'Amr al-Ma'afiri narrated to me, he said: I heard al-Anwar al-Fahmi saying: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Udays al-Balawi arrived—and he was among those who pledged allegiance under the tree—so he ascended the pulpit, praised Allah and extolled Him, then he mentioned 'Uthman. Abu Thawr said: So I entered upon 'Uthman while he was besieged, and I said: "So-and-so mentioned such-and-such." 'Uthman said: "And from where [did he get that]? I have stored up ten [virtues] with Allah: I am the fourth in Islam, and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) married his daughter to me, then his [other] daughter. And I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) with this right hand of mine, and I have not touched my private part with it, nor have I sung, nor have I wished for anything, nor have I drunk wine in the Age of Ignorance or in Islam. And the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: 'Who will buy this plot of land and add it to the mosque, and for him is a house in Paradise?' So I bought it and added it to the mosque."
