Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba 27:459

Ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from Yazid, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, who said: While the Prophet (peace be upon him) had a group of his companions with him, he sent [a messenger] to his wives, but he did not find anything with any of them. While they were in that state, they suddenly saw Ali approaching, disheveled and dusty, carrying on his shoulder nearly a sa’ of dates that he had worked for with his own hand. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Welcome to the bearer and the borne." Then he seated him and brushed the dust from his head, then said, "Welcome, Abu Turab." He brought it near, and they ate until they were satisfied. Then he sent to each of his wives a portion.
