Hadith 27:483
'Affan narrated to us, he said: Ja'far ibn Sulayman narrated to us, he said: Yazid al-Rishk narrated to me, from Mutarrif, from 'Imran ibn Husayn, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) sent a military detachment and appointed 'Ali over them. 'Ali did something that they disapproved of, so four of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) made a pact that they would inform him [the Prophet]. It was their custom that when they returned from a journey, they would begin with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), greet him, look at him, and then depart to their dwellings. He said: When the detachment arrived, they greeted the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). One of the four stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, do you not see that 'Ali did such and such?" The Messenger of Allah turned toward him, with anger recognizable on his face, and said: "What do you want from 'Ali? What do you want from 'Ali? 'Ali is from me, and I am from 'Ali, and 'Ali is the guardian (wali) of every believer after me."
