Hadith 27:71

Al-Muharibi narrated to us, from Abd al-Wahid ibn Ayman, from his father, who said: I said to Jabir ibn Abdullah, "Narrate to me a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) that you heard from him, so that I may narrate it from you." Jabir said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) on the day of the Trench, digging it. We remained for three days without eating food, nor were we able to find any. A hard rock appeared in the trench, so I came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, this is a hard rock that has appeared in the trench." We sprinkled water upon it. He said: So the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) stood up, and his stomach was bound with a stone. He took the pickaxe or the shovel, then mentioned the name of Allah three times, and struck it; it turned into a heap of loose sand. When I saw that from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), I said, "O Messenger of Allah, permit me." He permitted me. I came to my wife and said, "May your mother be bereaved of you! I have seen something from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) that I cannot bear. What do you have?" She said, "I have a sa' of barley and a young goat." He said: So we ground the barley, slaughtered the goat, skinned it, and put it in the cooking pot. We kneaded the barley, then I returned to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). I stayed for a while, then asked his permission a second time, and he permitted me. I came, and the dough was ready, so I ordered her to bake it, and I placed the pot on the trivets. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and whispered to him, saying, "We have a little food of ours, so if you would like to come with me, you and a man or two men with you, I would do so." He said, "How much is it?" I said, "A sa' of barley and a young goat." He said, "Return to your family and tell her not to remove the pot from the trivets and not to take the bread out of the oven until I come." Then he said to the people, "Stand up to the house of Jabir." He said: I felt a shyness that only Allah knows. I said to my wife, "May your mother be bereaved of you! The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) has come to you with all his companions." She said, "Did the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) ask you about the food?" I said, "Yes." She said, "Allah and His Messenger know best. You have informed him of what we had." He said: Some of what I was feeling left me, and I said to her, "You have spoken the truth." He said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) came and entered, then said to his companions, "Do not crowd one another." Then he knelt over the oven and the pot. We began to take bread from the oven and take meat from the pot, crumbling the bread and ladling the stew, and bringing it near to them. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, "Let seven or eight sit at the platter." He said: When they had eaten, we uncovered the oven and the pot, and they had returned to being as full as they were. We continued to crumble bread, ladle stew, and bring it near to them. We did not cease doing that; every time we opened the oven and uncovered the pot, we found them as full as they were, until all the Muslims were satisfied, and a portion of the food remained. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said to us, "The people have been afflicted with hunger, so eat and feed others." He said: We did not cease eating and feeding others throughout our day. He said: And he informed me that they were eight hundred or three hundred.
