Hadith 5:283

Muhammad ibn Bakr narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, who said: Musa ibn Uqbah informed me, from Nafi’, from Ibn Umar, that he used to say: Regarding the charity of fruits and crops, and whatever there is of date palms or crops of wheat, barley, or *sult* (a type of barley) that is *ba’l* (naturally irrigated by groundwater), or irrigated by a river, or irrigated by a spring, or *athari* (irrigated by rain)—in that is a tenth (1/10); for every ten, one. And whatever of it is irrigated by *nadḥ* (drawing water by animal/machine), in that is half a tenth (1/20); for every twenty, one. And the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, wrote to the people of Yemen, to al-Harith ibn ‘Abd Kulal and those with him from the people of Yemen, from Ma’afir and Hamdan, that upon the believers, from the charity of their wealth, is a tenth of what is irrigated by springs and what is irrigated by the sky (rain), and upon what is irrigated by the *gharb* (large bucket drawn by animals), is half a tenth.
