Hadith 5:588
Muhammad ibn Bakr narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from ‘Ata’, who said: If he was a mukatab (a slave under a contract of manumission) and he paid off [the debt] on his own behalf, then he has sufficed himself. And if he did not pay off [the debt] on his own behalf, his master shall pay it on his behalf.
حدثنا محمد بن بكر عن بن جريج عن عطاء قال ان كان مكاتبا فطرح عن نفسه فقال كفى نفسه وإن لم يطرح عن نفسه أدى عنه سيده
