Hadith 5:783
'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from 'Ubayd Allah ibn 'Abd Allah, that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab appointed his father and another man over the alms (sadaqat) of the people of the covenant (ahl al-dhimma) regarding what they transport to Medina. He used to command them to take half of a tenth (half-tithe) from wheat, as a lightening for them, so that they would transport it to Medina. And from legumes, which are the grains, [he commanded them to take] a tenth.
حدثنا عبد الأعلى عن معمر عن الزهري عن عبيد الله بن عبد الله أن عمر بن الخطاب استعمل أباه ورجلا آخر على صدقات أهل الذمة مما يختلفون به إلى المدينة فكان يأمرهم أن يأخذوا عن القمح نصف العشر تخفيفا عليهم ليحملوا على المدينة ومن القطنية وهي الحبوب العشر
