Hadith 5:884
Al-Fadl ibn Dukayn narrated to us, from Hammad ibn Zayd, from Harun ibn Ri'ab, from Kinanah ibn Nu'aym, from Qabisah ibn al-Mukhariq al-Hilali, who said: I undertook a debt (hamalah), so I came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asking him regarding it. He said: "Stay, O Qabisah, until the charity comes to us, so I may order it for you." He said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to me: "O Qabisah, asking is not permissible except for one of three: A man who undertook a debt, so asking is permissible for him until he obtains it, then he refrains. And a man who was struck by a calamity that destroyed his wealth, so asking is permissible for him until he obtains a subsistence of life. And a man who was struck by poverty such that three men of sound judgment from his people say: 'So-and-so has been struck by poverty,' so asking is permissible for him until he obtains a subsistence of life, then he refrains." He said: "O Qabisah, whatever is besides these from asking is forbidden (suht) which its possessor consumes."
