Hadith 5:986

Ubayd Allah ibn Musa narrated to us, from Isra'il, from al-Suddi, from Abu Malik, from al-Bara' regarding the saying of the Exalted: "And do not aim for the wicked [things]..." He said: It was revealed concerning us. We were owners of date palms, and a man would come from his date palms according to their small or large amount. He said: A man would come with a cluster [of dates], and a man would come with two clusters, and he would hang it in the mosque. He said: The people of the Suffah had no food, so when one of them would come to the cluster, he would strike it with a stick, and the dates and the unripe dates would fall from it, and he would eat. And there were people who had no desire for goodness, so one of them would come with a cluster that contained rotten dates and shriveled dates, and he would come with a cluster that had broken, and he would hang it. He said: So Allah revealed: "And do not aim for the wicked [things] from it to spend, while you would not take it yourselves except with closed eyes." He said: If one of you were gifted the like of what he gave, he would not take it except with closed eyes and shame. He said: So after that, a man would come with the best of what he had.
