Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 7:33

Bishr ibn al-Walid, Ubayd Allah ibn Umar al-Qawariri, and Surayj ibn Yunus narrated to us, saying: Yusuf ibn Ya'qub al-Majishun informed us, from Salih ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, who said: "I was standing on the day of Badr in the row, and I looked to my right and my left, and behold, I was between two young boys, recent in their age, from the Ansar. I wished that I were between those who were stronger than them. Then one of them nudged me and said, 'O uncle, do you know Abu Jahl?' I said, 'Yes. And what is your need for him, O son of my brother?' He said, 'I have been informed that he insults the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if I see him, my shadow shall not depart from his shadow until the one of us who is destined to die sooner, dies.' I was amazed at that. Then the other nudged me and said to me the same thing. I had not waited long when I looked at Abu Jahl moving among the people. I said to them, 'Do you not see? This is your companion whom you were asking about.' They both rushed toward him and struck him with their swords until they killed him. Then they went to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and informed him. He said, 'Which of you killed him?' Each of them said, 'I killed him.' He said, 'Have you wiped your swords?' They said, 'No.' He looked at the two swords and said, 'Both of you killed him.' He decreed his spoils for Mu'adh ibn Amr ibn al-Jamuh, and the name of the other was Mu'adh ibn Afra."
