Hadith 151:14

Hadbana ibn Khalid narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Thabit, from Anas, from Ibn Mas’ud, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Indeed, the last person to enter Paradise is a man who walks upon the Sirat (bridge), stumbling once and falling once, and the Fire lashes him once. When he turns toward it, he says: 'Praise be to Allah who has saved me from you. Allah has given me something He has not given to anyone among the first or the last.' Then a tree is raised for him, and he says: 'O my Lord, bring me near to this tree so that I may seek shade in its shade and drink from its water.' Allah says: 'O son of Adam, perhaps if I bring you near to it, you will ask Me for something else.' He makes a covenant with Him that he will not ask Him for anything else, and his Lord knows that he will ask Him for something else because he sees what he has no patience for. So Allah brings him near to it, and he seeks shade in its shade and drinks from its water. Then another tree is raised for him, which is better than that tree, and he says: 'O my Lord, bring me near to this tree so that I may seek shade in its shade and drink from its water.' Allah says: 'O son of Adam, did you not covenant with Me that you would not ask Me for anything else?' He says: 'Yes, O my Lord, but this tree—I will not ask You for anything else.' He makes a covenant with Him that he will not ask Him for anything else, and his Lord knows that he will ask Him for something else, and his Lord excuses him because he sees what he has no patience for. So Allah brings him near to it, and he seeks shade in its shade and drinks from its water. Then a tree is raised for him at the gate of Paradise, which is better than those two previous trees, and he says: 'O my Lord, bring me near to this tree so that I may seek shade in its shade and drink from its water.' Allah says: 'O son of Adam, did you not covenant that you would not ask Me for anything else?' He says: 'O my Lord, bring me near to this tree so that I may seek shade in its shade and drink from its water.' Allah says to him: 'Perhaps if I bring you near to it, you will ask Me for something else.' He makes a covenant with Him that he will not ask Him for anything else, and his Lord knows that he will ask Him for something else, and his Lord excuses him because he sees what he has no patience for. So He brings him near to it. Then he hears the voices of the people of Paradise and says: 'O my Lord, admit me into Paradise.' Allah says: 'Would it please you if I gave you the world and the like of it with it?' He says: 'O my Lord, are You mocking me, while You are the Lord of the worlds?' He said: 'I am not mocking you, but I am able to do whatever I will.'"
