Hadith 1:20

Abu Sa'id al-Qawariri narrated to us, Yazid bin Harun narrated to us, Sufyan bin Husayn narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Salim bin Abdullah bin Umar, from Ibn Umar, who said: When Hafsa became a widow and was previously married to Khunays bin Hudhafa, Umar went to Abu Bakr and offered her to him, but he remained silent. Then he went to Uthman and offered her to him, and Uthman said, "I have no need for women." Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) proposed to her, so he married her off to him. Later, he met Abu Bakr and said, "I had offered Hafsa to you and you remained silent, and I was more angry with you than I was with Uthman when he rejected me." Abu Bakr said, "It is not that I did not consider her matter, but it was a secret, and I disliked disclosing the secret."
