Hadith 1:22
Ja'far ibn Mihran al-Sabbak narrated to us, 'Abd al-A'la ibn 'Abd al-A'la al-Sami narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: Husayn ibn 'Abd Allah narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: When they wanted to dig for the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah used to make a *darih* (a trench in the center of the grave) and he used to dig for the people of Mecca. Abu Talhah Zayd ibn Sahl was the one who used to dig for the people of Medina, and he used to make a *lahd* (a niche in the side of the grave). Al-'Abbas called two men and said to one of them: "Go to Abu 'Ubaydah," and to the other: "Go to Abu Talhah. O Allah, choose for Your Messenger." The companion of Abu Talhah found Abu Talhah and brought him, so he made a *lahd* for the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). When they finished the preparation of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) on Tuesday, he was placed on his bed. The Muslims had differed regarding his burial; one speaker said: "We shall bury him in his mosque," and another speaker said: "Rather, he shall be buried with his companions." Abu Bakr said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) say: 'No prophet is taken (in death) except that he is buried where he was taken.'" So the bedding of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) upon which he died was lifted, and it was dug for him underneath it. Then the people were called to pray over the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) in groups, the men first. When they finished with them, the women were brought in. When they finished with the women, the children were brought in. No one led the people in prayer over the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was buried in the middle of the night on the night of Wednesday.
