Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 1:6

Suwayd narrated to us, al-Walid ibn Muhammad informed us, from al-Zuhri, Salim narrated to me that he heard his father narrating that when Hafsa, daughter of Hudhayfa, became a widow, Umar said: I met Uthman and offered Hafsa to him. He said: "I will look into my affair." I waited for some nights, then he met me and said: "It has appeared to me that I should not marry this day of mine." Umar said: So I met Abu Bakr and said: "I will marry Hafsa to you." He did not return anything to me, and I was more resentful toward him than I was toward Uthman. I waited for some nights, then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) proposed to her, and I married her to him. Then Abu Bakr met me and said: "Perhaps you were resentful toward me when you offered Hafsa to me?" I said: "Yes." He said: "Nothing prevented me from returning an answer to you except that I knew the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had mentioned her, and I was not one to disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Had he left her, I would have accepted her." Umar said: So I complained about Uthman to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Hafsa will marry one who is better than Uthman, and Uthman will marry one who is better than Hafsa." And the Prophet (peace be upon him) married his daughter to him.
