Abu Ma‘mar narrated to us, Hushaym narrated to us, from ‘Umar ibn Abi Salamah, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Allah has not sent a prophet, nor has there been a successor after him—he [the narrator] said: I think he said—except that he had two inner circles (bitanatan): an inner circle that commands him to do good and forbids him from evil, and an inner circle that does not spare him from corruption. Whoever is protected from the evil [of the latter] has indeed been protected."
