Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 155:342

Daud ibn Rashid narrated to us, Khalaf ibn Khalifah narrated to us, Yazid ibn Kaysan narrated to us, from Abu Hazim, from Abu Hurayrah: That a guest descended upon the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) one day. So he sent to his wives, "Do you have anything? For a guest has descended upon me tonight." They sent back to him, "No, by the One who sent you with the truth, we have nothing but water." He said: While he was like that, a man from the Ansar came and said, "O Prophet of Allah, do you have anything to take care of our guest tonight?" The Ansari said, "Yes, O Prophet of Allah." He said, "Then go with the guest." He said: When he arrived at his home, he said to his wife, "Do you have anything?" She said, "Yes, a loaf of bread for us." He said, "Pretend you are fixing the lamp, then extinguish it, and place the bread." He began to put his hand in with the guest, he and his wife, and they would raise their hands to their mouths while not eating anything, and they left the guest alone with the bread, so he ate it. When morning came, the guest went to his need. The Ansari said, "I reached the hour at which I come to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)." He said, "So I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and he looked at me from afar and said, 'What did you do with your guest last night?'" He said: I thought that the guest had complained about me to the Messenger of Allah, so I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I said such and such." He said, "Jibril (peace be upon him) came to me and informed me that your Lord marveled at what you did with your guest," or he said, "laughed."
