Harim ibn ‘Abd al-A‘la ibn al-Furat al-Asadi and Harun ibn Ma‘ruf narrated to us, they said: al-Mu‘tamir ibn Sulayman narrated to us, he said: I heard my father narrating from Abu Hazim, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: Abu Jahl said, "Does Muhammad smear his face with dust among you?" They said, "Yes." He said, "By that which we swear by, if I were to see that, I would step upon his neck." He said: It was said to him, "There he is, praying." So he came to him, claiming he would step upon his neck. He said: Suddenly, he was seen retreating on his heels and shielding himself with his hands. His companions went to him and said, "What is the matter with you, O Abu al-Hakam?" He said, "Indeed, between me and him is a trench of fire and wings." The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "By Him in whose hand is my soul, if he had drawn near to me, the angels would have snatched him limb by limb." He said: Then Allah revealed: "Have you seen the one who forbids a servant when he prays? Have you seen if he denies and turns away?"—meaning Abu Jahl—"Does he not know that Allah sees?" until the end of the verses. "Then let him call his associates"—meaning his people—"We will call the angels of punishment." He said: The angels. "No! Do not obey him," and He commanded him with that which He commanded him. Harim said: al-Mu‘tamir said: My father mentioned this regarding Abu Hurayrah, or not, when he mentioned: "Have you seen the one who forbids a servant when he prays?"
