Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 147:31

Al-Salt ibn Mas'ud al-Jahdari narrated to us, Ja'far ibn Sulayman narrated to us, Abu Zilal narrated to me, he said: Anas narrated to me, from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), he said: Two men traveled through a desert. One of them was a worshiper, and the other had a tendency toward sin. The worshiper became thirsty until he collapsed. His companion began to look at him, and he had with him a water container containing some water. He kept looking at him while he was prostrate, and he said: "By Allah, if this righteous worshiper dies of thirst while I have water, I will never attain any good from Allah. And if I give him my water, I will surely die." So he relied upon Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He) and resolved, and he sprinkled some of his water upon him and gave him to drink from what remained. He said: So he stood up, and they crossed the desert. He said: The one who had the tendency toward sin will be stopped on the Day of Resurrection for judgment, and it will be commanded that he be taken to the Fire. The angels will drive him, and he will see the worshiper. He will say: "O so-and-so, do you not recognize me?" He said: He will say: "Who are you?" He will say: "I am so-and-so, the one whom I preferred over myself on the day of the desert." He said: He will say: "Yes, I recognize you." He said: So he will say to the angels: "Stop." He said: So he will be stopped, and he will come until he stands and calls upon his Lord. He will say: "O Lord, You know the favor he did for me and how he preferred me over himself. O Lord, grant him to me." He will say: "He is yours." He said: So he will come and take him by the hand and enter him into Paradise. Al-Salt said: Ja'far said: I said: "Did Anas narrate to you from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)?" He said: "Yes."
