Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 147:57

Shayban narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Sulaym al-Dabbi narrated to us, Anas ibn Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prepared an army against the polytheists, among whom were Abu Bakr and Umar. He gave them command over them and all the people. He said to them: "Hasten the journey, for between you and the polytheists is water. If the polytheists reach that water before you, it will be difficult for the people, and you, your beasts, and your mounts will suffer severe thirst." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) remained behind with eight others, he being the ninth. He said to his companions: "Would you like for us to rest a little, then catch up with the people?" They said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." So they rested, and nothing awakened them except the heat of the sun. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) awoke, and his companions awoke. He said to them: "Rise and fulfill your needs." They did so, then returned to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to them: "Does anyone among you have water?" A man among them said: "O Messenger of Allah, [I have] a water vessel (miḍ'ah) in which there is some water." He said: "Bring it." He brought it, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) took it, wiped it with his palms, and prayed for blessing. Then he said to his companions: "Come and perform ablution." They came, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) began pouring [water] over them until they had performed ablution. A man among them gave the call to prayer and the iqamah, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led them in prayer. He said to the owner of the water vessel: "Guard your water vessel, for it will have a story." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and his companions rode ahead of the people. He said to his companions: "What do you think the people have done?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said to them: "Indeed, Abu Bakr and Umar are among them, and they will guide the people." The people arrived, and the polytheists had reached that water first. It became difficult for the people, and they, their mounts, and their beasts suffered severe thirst. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Where is the owner of the water vessel?" He said: "Here he is, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Bring your water vessel." He brought it, and there was some water in it. He said to them all: "Come and drink." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) began pouring for them until they all drank, watered their beasts and mounts, and filled every water skin, leather bag, and large water container. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and his companions set out toward the polytheists. Allah sent a wind that struck the faces of the polytheists, and Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, sent down His victory and gave [the Muslims] power over their backs. They killed a great number of them, took many captives, and drove away much spoils. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and the people returned in abundance and in good condition.
