Hadith 126:3
Muhammad ibn Bakkar narrated to us, Abu Ma'shar narrated to us, from Ya'qub ibn Zayd ibn Talhah, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: A man was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for his infliction upon the enemy and his diligence [in worship]. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "I do not know this man." He said, "Rather, he is described as such and such." He said, "I do not know him." While we were like that, the man appeared. He said, "This is he, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "I did not know him. This is the first horn I have seen in my nation; there is a mark of Satan upon him." When the man drew near, he gave the greeting of peace, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) returned the greeting to him. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him, "I adjure you by Allah, did you not say to yourself when you appeared before us that there is no one among the people better than you?" He said, "O Allah, yes." He said, "Then he entered the mosque and prayed." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Abu Bakr, "Stand up and kill him." Abu Bakr entered and found him standing in prayer. Abu Bakr said to himself, "Prayer has sanctity and a right, and if I were to consult the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) [again]..." He came to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him, "Did you kill him?" He said, "No, I saw him praying and I saw that prayer has sanctity and a right, and if you wish for me to kill him, I will kill him." He said, "You are not the one for him. Go, you, O Umar, and kill him." Umar entered the mosque and found him prostrating. He waited for him for a long time, then said to himself, "Prostration has a right, and if I were to consult the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) [again], for one who is better than me has already consulted him." He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he said, "Did you kill him?" He said, "No, I saw him prostrating and I saw that prostration has a right, and if you wish for me to kill him, I will kill him." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "You are not the one for him. Stand up, O Ali, you are the one for him if you find him." He entered and found that he had left the mosque, so he returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, "Did you kill him?" He said, "No." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "If he had been killed today, no two men from my nation would have differed until the Dajjal emerges." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) told them about the nations and said, "The nation of Musa split into seventy-one sects; seventy of them are in the Fire and one is in Paradise. The nation of Isa split into seventy-two sects; seventy-one of them are in the Fire and one is in Paradise." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "And my nation will exceed both groups by one; seventy-two in the Fire and one in Paradise." They said, "Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "The congregations (al-jama'at)." Ya'qub ibn Zayd said: When Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) would narrate this hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he would recite in it the Quran: "And among the people of Musa is a community that guides by the truth and by it they do justice." Then he mentioned the nation of Isa and said: "And if only the People of the Scripture had believed and feared Allah, We would have removed from them their misdeeds..." until His saying: "...evil is that which they were doing." Then he mentioned our nation: "And among those We created is a community that guides by the truth and by it they do justice."
