Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 42:156

From the Musnad of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (RA)

Hadith 42:156

'Asim ibn al-Nadr al-Ahwal narrated to us, Ma'mar narrated to us, he said: I heard my father, he said: Qatadah narrated to us, from Hilal, the brother of Banu Murrah ibn 'Abbad, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, he said: Abu Sa'id said: We were in severe need, so my family ordered me to go to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and ask him for something. He said: So I came, and among the first things I heard the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) say was: "Whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient; whoever seeks chastity, Allah will make him chaste; and whoever asks us, we will not withhold anything from him if we find it," or as he said. He said: So I said to myself, "I will seek self-sufficiency, so Allah will make me self-sufficient, and I will seek chastity, so Allah will make me chaste." He said: So I did not ask the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) for anything.
