Zuhayr narrated to us, Abd al-Samad narrated to us, my father narrated to us, Dawud narrated to us, from Abu Nadra, from Abu Sa’id, that Ma’iz ibn Malik came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed a transgression (hadd), so establish it upon me." The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, turned him away three or four times. Then he asked about him: "Is there any problem with him?" They said: "No, O Messenger of Allah, except that he has committed a transgression, and he does not see that anything will absolve him of it except the punishment (hadd)." He said: So the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, gave the order, and we set off with him to Baqi’ al-Gharqad. We did not dig for him, nor did we bind him, and we pelted him with pottery shards and bones. That became difficult for him, so he ran toward the Harrah (stony ground), and we followed him and pelted him with the boulders of the Harrah until he became silent. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, stood up to deliver a sermon and said: "When we go out in the way of Allah, one of them stays behind, having a bleating like the bleating of a goat. Verily, I will not be brought anyone from those [who do that] except that I will make an example of him." He said: It is claimed that he did not curse him, nor did he ask for forgiveness for him.
