Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 42:294

From the Musnad of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (RA)

Hadith 42:294

Zuhayr narrated to us, Yunus narrated to us, Shayban narrated to us, from Qatadah, who said: Hilal ibn Hisn narrated from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, who said: A severe hardship once afflicted me, so some of my family said to me, "If only you would ask the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) for us." He said: So I went, feeling distressed, to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). The first thing he met me with from his speech was that he said: "Whoever seeks to be chaste, Allah will make him chaste; whoever seeks to be self-sufficient, Allah will make him self-sufficient; and whoever asks us for something, we will not withhold anything from him that we find." He said: So I returned to myself, choosing for it that I should seek to be chaste so that Allah might make me chaste, and that I should seek to be self-sufficient so that Allah might make me self-sufficient. He said: I never walked to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) after that to ask him for anything due to poverty, until the world came upon us and overwhelmed us, except for those whom Allah protected.
