Zuhayr narrated to us, Yazid bin Harun narrated to us, Muhammad bin ‘Amr informed us, from ‘Umar bin al-Hakam bin Thawban, that Abu Sa’id al-Khudri said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent ‘Alqamah bin Mujazziz on an expedition, and I was among them. We set out until, when we were at the end of our expedition or on some part of the road, a group sought his permission, and he granted it to them. He appointed ‘Abdullah bin Hudhafah over them, and he was one of the companions of Badr, and he had a playful nature. I was among those who returned with him. While we were on some part of the road, we stopped at a place, and the people lit a fire to warm themselves or to prepare some food for themselves. Then ‘Abdullah said to them, "Do I not have the right of hearing and obedience over you?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Will you not do anything I command you to do?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Then I command you, by my right and my obedience, to leap into this fire." Some people stood up and tightened their garments. When he thought they were about to leap into it, he said, "Hold yourselves back, for I was only joking with you." When they arrived at the Prophet of Allah (ﷺ), they mentioned that to him. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Whoever among them commands you to commit an act of disobedience, do not obey him."
