Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 42:383

Zuhayr narrated to us, Affan narrated to us, Hammam narrated to us, Qatadah narrated to us, from Abu al-Siddiq, from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace): That a man killed ninety-nine souls, then he asked for the most learned person on earth. He was directed to a man, so he came to him and said: "I have killed ninety-nine souls, so is there any repentance for me?" He said: "After killing ninety-nine, there is no repentance for you." So he drew his sword and killed him, completing one hundred with him. He said: Then he remained for as long as Allah willed, then he asked for the most learned person on earth. He was directed to a man and said: "I have killed one hundred souls, so is there any repentance for me?" He said: "And who stands between you and repentance? Depart from this wicked village in which you are to such-and-such village, and worship your Lord among them." He said: So he departed, and his death overtook him on the road. The angels of mercy and the angels of punishment disputed over him. Iblis said: "He never disobeyed me for an hour." The angels of mercy said: "He went out repentant." Humayd al-Tawil claimed that Bakr narrated to him from Abu Rafi’ who said: Allah sent an angel, and they gathered to him. The hadith returned to the hadith of Qatadah. He said: He said: "Look to which of the two villages he was closer, and attach him to its people." Qatadah said: Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He) brought the righteous village closer and distanced the wicked one from him, and they attached him to its people.
