From the Musnad of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (RA)
من مسند أبي سعيد الخدري
Hadith 42:385
Zuhayr narrated to us, Yahya ibn Abi Bukayr narrated to us, Fudayl ibn Marzuq narrated to us, from Atiyyah al-Awfi, who said: Abu Sa’id said: A man from the Ansar said to his companions, "By Allah, I used to tell you that if matters were to become established for him (the Prophet), he would prefer others over you." He said: So they retorted to him with a harsh response. He said: This reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He said: So he came to them and said things to them that I do not memorize. They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "And you were not riding horses." He said: Every time he said something to them, they said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." When he saw that they were not responding to him with anything, he said, "Will you not say: Your people fought you, so we gave you victory; and your people expelled you, so we gave you shelter?" They said, "We do not say that, O Messenger of Allah; you are the one who says it." He said: So he said, "O assembly of Ansar, are you not pleased that the people go away with the worldly life, while you go away with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)?" He said, "O assembly of Ansar, are you not pleased that if the people traveled through a valley and you traveled through a valley, I would travel through the valley of the Ansar?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Were it not for the Hijrah, I would have been a man from the Ansar. The Ansar are my inner garment and my household; they are the container to which I retreat. Pardon their wrongdoers and accept from their righteous ones." Abu Sa’id said: Ibn Marjanah, the enemy of Allah, did not know that. Abu Sa’id said: I said to Mu’awiyah, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had told us that we would see favoritism after him." Mu’awiyah said, "So what did he command you?" I said, "He commanded us to be patient." He said, "Then be patient."
