From the Musnad of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (RA)
Hadith 42:49
Muhammad ibn Bakkar narrated to us, Abu Ma’shar narrated to us, Aflah ibn ‘Abdullah ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from ‘Ubaydullah ibn ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Utbah ibn Mas’ud, from Abu Sa’id, who said: I was present with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) on the day of Hunayn while he was distributing a portion among the people. A man from Banu Umayyah stood up and said to him, "Be just, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said to him, "You have failed and lost if I am not just. If I am not just, then who is just? Woe to you!" ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab asked the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) for permission to kill him. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, "I am not one who kills my companions. People will emerge who say the like of his speech; they recite the Qur’an, but it does not pass beyond their throats. They pass through the religion just as an arrow passes through the game." He then took an arrow and looked at its shaft, but did not see anything in it. Then he looked at its arrowhead—meaning the projectile—and did not see anything in it. Then he looked at its feathers and did not see anything in it; it had outstripped the dung and blood. Their sign is a man whose hand is like the breast of a woman, or like a piece of flesh that quivers, with a few hairs on it like the whiskers of a lion. Abu Sa’id said: I was present for this from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) on the day of Hunayn, and I was present with ‘Ali on the day he killed them at Nahrawan. He said: ‘Ali searched for him but did not find him. He said: Then he found him after that under a wall, according to this description. ‘Ali said, "Which of you recognizes this?" A man from the people said, "We recognize him; this is Hurqus, and his mother is here." He said: ‘Ali sent for his mother and said to her, "Who is this?" She said, "I do not know, O Commander of the Faithful, except that I was grazing some sheep of mine during the Jahiliyyah at al-Rabadhah, and something like the form of a shadow covered me, so I became pregnant from it and gave birth to this."
