Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 128:10

Hadith 128:10

Ahmad ibn Isa al-Masri narrated to us, Abdullah ibn Wahb narrated to us, Sa’id ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Amya’ narrated to me that Sahl ibn Abi Umamah narrated to him that he and his father entered upon Anas ibn Malik in Medina during the time of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, while he was the governor. He prayed a light prayer, as if it were the prayer of a traveler, or close to it. When he finished the prayer, he said, "May Allah have mercy on you, do you see this as the obligatory prayer, or something you performed as a supererogatory act?" He said, "It is the obligatory prayer, and it is the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I did not miss anything except something I forgot. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to say: 'Do not be harsh upon yourselves, lest Allah be harsh upon you; for a people were harsh upon themselves, so Allah was harsh upon them. Those are their remnants in the hermitages and monasteries—a monasticism they innovated, which We did not prescribe for them.'" Then, the next morning, they said, "Let us ride out so we may look and take heed." He said, "Yes." So they all rode out, and behold, they were at desolate dwellings whose people had perished, become extinct, and vanished, with their roofs fallen in. They said, "Do you recognize these dwellings?" He said, "How well I know them and their people! These are the people of dwellings destroyed by transgression and envy. Indeed, envy extinguishes the light of good deeds, and transgression confirms that or denies it. The eye commits adultery, as do the palm, the foot, the hand, the tongue, and the private part; it confirms that or denies it."
