Musnad Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah (RA)
Hadith 8:9
'Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Asma', the nephew of Juwayriyah, narrated to us, saying: Mahdi ibn Maymun narrated to us, saying: Wasil, the freed slave of Abu 'Uyaynah, narrated to us, from Abu Sayf al-Jarmi, from al-Walid ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, a man from the jurists of the people of al-Sham, from 'Iyad ibn 'Utayf, who said: I entered upon Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah during his illness, and his wife was sitting at his head, while he was facing the wall with his face. I said, "How did Abu 'Ubaydah spend the night?" She said, "He spent the night with a reward." He said, "By Allah, I did not spend the night with a reward." The people were troubled by what he said, so he said, "Will you not ask me about what I said?" They replied, "We were not pleased with what you said, so how should we ask you?" He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'Whoever spends an extra expenditure in the way of Allah, it is [multiplied] by seven hundred. And whoever spends on his family, or visits a sick person, or removes a harmful object, then a good deed is [multiplied] by ten times its like. And fasting is a shield as long as one does not tear it. And whoever Allah tests with a trial in his body, it is an expiation for him.'"
