Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 63:1

Hadba narrated to us, Hammad bin Salama narrated to us, from Thabit, from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, from al-Miqdad bin Amr al-Kindi, who said: I arrived to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) with two men of my companions. We sought whether anyone would host us, but no one hosted us. So we came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, hunger and hardship have afflicted us, and we sought whether anyone would host us, but no one hosted us." He handed us four goats and said: "O Miqdad, take these and milk them, then divide them into four portions: a portion for me, a portion for you, and a portion for your two companions." I used to do that. When one night came, I drank my portion, and my two companions drank their portions, and I placed the portion of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) in the bowl and covered it. The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was delayed. My soul said to me: "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) has surely been invited by a household from Medina, so he has eaten dinner with them, and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) has no need for this milk." My soul did not cease to manipulate me until I stood up to the bowl and drank what was in it. When it settled in my stomach, what had passed and what was to come seized me. My soul said to me: "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) will come hungry and thirsty, then he will lift the bowl and find nothing in it, and he will invoke [a curse] against you." So I covered myself as if I were sleeping, though I was not sleeping. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) came and gave a greeting that the awake would hear, but would not wake the sleeper. When he did not see anything in the bowl, he raised his head to the sky and said: "O Allah, feed whoever fed us, and give drink to whoever gave us drink." I seized the supplication of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), so I took the knife, intending to slaughter one of those goats to feed him. I struck with my hand and it landed on its udder, and behold, it was full. Then I looked at all of them, and behold, they were full. I milked into the bowl until it was full, then I came to him while I was smiling. He said: "Hey, some of your misdeeds, O Miqdad?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, drink, then I will inform you." He drank, then I drank what remained, then I informed him. He said: "O Miqdad, this is a blessing; you should have informed me so that we could wake our two companions and give them to drink from this blessing." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, since you have drunk the blessing and I have, I do not care who else missed it."
